Assembling the Music Play list – 641 days to go

Ipod Shuffle headphones charger on tabletop

I spend a lot of time at my kitchen table streaming music on youtube while working. Occasionally I come upon some gems that remind me of good times from travel long ago. Hearing the first couple of chords make me long for a travel adventure. Whenever I come across these songs, I begin to jot them down in my notebook. I hope when we finally take off we’ll have a great youtube playlist assembled that will keep us motivated. Our children generally drive our youtube viewing, and as a result, an inordinate amount of Disney soundtracks that pop up throughout the day.

So unlike other posts, this is just a quick list of our top 5 travel songs.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Sweet Home Alabama – I have never been to Alabama. But based on prior experiences with travellers abroad, many others have and pine for their return. A great time whenever it comes on.

Toto Africa – So good. Maybe if we listen to it enough ahead of time, we will add Africa to the trip.

Bryan Adams – Summer of 69 – I can’t dance but this one always makes me get up and try. This brings back fond memories of my first backpacking trip through Europe. Plus he is Canadian.

Some Things Never Change – Disney Frozen 2 Soundtrack – I said kids dictate things around here. Whether it is belting it out at the campsite or singing it while riding the bus, this song makes the family the happiest.

Spirit of the West – Home for A Rest – Even the grainy video is on point. I think only Canadians request it. This is one of the songs they used to play to close bars during our university days. One of the few songs I know all the lyrics too.

Like everything about this trip, it is a work in progress. And you might be asking why a “youtube” playlist. Full transparency I tried to resurrect my old ipod shuffle and bought a cheap $2 charger from Ali express. Alas it charged once and bit the dust for good. So the days of “downloading” them onto a portable device seems like they are behind us. YouTube playlist it is then.

Finally, I know it has been over a month since my previous point and I want to come clean. Paige and I have thrown ourselves back into work. Earning and subsequently saving money for the trip easily takes the most of our time. This is more true since we agreed to increase the budget for the trip. I promise I will give a better progress update next time.

Ciao for now.

Mike

*imagines Mike on the kitchen table listening to Taylor Swift*
Check out Vampire Weekend! A-Punk is a good starter song but the 3rd album is the best.

Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” did not make the travel cut, but it has been streamed in the house before.

Times like these – Foo Fighters (both acoustic and ‘regular’ are great travel songs)

Good call. Acoustic is a definite addition to the list.
